The Ashkhabad lies in 55′ of water off Cape Lookout, NC. On April 30, 1942 the ship was traveling from New York to Cuba when it was torpedoed by the U-402. The ship was abandoned and the crew was rescued by its escort ship, the Lady Elsa. Days later the USS Semmes shelled the wrecked ship based on orders to sink any ship that posed a danger to navigation. At the time, Semmes was unaware of plans to try to salvage the ship. Later the wreck was flattened to make it safer for shipping in the area.
